Pendleton College and Stage Directions team up with Girl Gang to create a
brand-new show.
Stage Directions and Pendleton College have announced Girl Gang Manchester as the successful theatre company to be awarded their £10,000 2022 commission.
Between now and July 2022, a group of students Pendleton College will work with Manchester-based Girl Gang, to learn about their practice, and co-create a brand-new piece of theatre.
Girl Gang Manchester are a female-led collective of artists whose work centres on collaboration and thrives on working with new people, ideas and perspectives to create ground-breaking and game-changing experiences.
Megan, Girl Gang’s Artistic Director said “We have been increasingly interested in bringing our work to a younger audience in order to share ideas about the world and learn from one another. We’re looking forward to combining our political pop cultural passions and peeves with the group to create work that is exciting and impactful and says something about the world we live in together!”
Bringing Girl Gang’s distinctive style together with direct input and material from the student ensemble, this partnership is the second of its kind commissioned by Stage Directions. Last year, a student ensemble worked with theatre company ThickSkin on a bold and ambitious physical theatre piece.
A student involved in last year’s ensemble had this to say about the experience of working with a professional company: “The relationship between the directors and cast, definitely feels like a professional setting rather than a teacher-student relationship. It gives you so much more confidence to put effort in because it feels like you’re actually doing a professional project! So it’s just like a really nice approach to devising.”
The Ensemble is also joined once again by Joe Gilmour, a local theatre director and creative practitioner who specialises in creative, positive experiences for young people. Joe has been working with the students through the selection process and to warm them up for co-creating with Girl Gang.
Through a rigorous application process involving the Stage Directions team, Pendleton College Staff, freelance theatre facilitators and students from the ensemble, Girl Gang were chosen from lots of wonderful artists and organisations.
Steph Green, Programme Manager, Stage Directions said “This commission is a cornerstone of the work we do with young people and creative professionals and looks to be a shining example of how co-creation can work in participatory arts. We are thrilled to welcome Girl Gang for this commission who will be a great match for the excellent, talented and enthusiastic students at Pendleton!”
More updates and reflections on the process will be shared on the Stage Directions Social Media chanels: Instagram/Twitter: @SalfordSD

CHOL THEATRE IMAGINARY COMMUNITIES ONLINE CPD
We've teamed up with Stage Directions to offer a 2 part online workshop for educators and artists in Salford to understand CHOL Art's collaborative and creative learning methodology.
About this Event
This is a two part online workshop introducing you to Chol's unique dramatic story-making process, Imaginary Communities (IC).
IC is a playful and open-ended approach, in which a group collectively imagines and creates a dramatic setting and cast of characters before launching their very own story.
Part 1: Monday 7th December 4pm-5.30pm
Part 2: Wednesday 9th December 4pm-5.30pm
Over the two sessions you will be guided through the initial artistic stages of IC and learn about Chol's Equal Playmaker pedagogy. The workshops involve a mixture of practical creative activities, discussions, and a chance to ask questions about Chol’s delivery in schools and community settings.
This 2 part workshop is perfect for Salford-based teachers, educators and artists who are interested in learning more about drama and story-making in education. The workshops are friendly and relaxed and open to all levels of experience.
