Salford Learning Project team up with Outstanding Theatre Company
Cultural Education Programme, Stage Directions have teamed up with Pendleton College in a search for the perfect theatre company to work with their students to explore making fresh, exciting and innovative performances together!
Stage Directions is a theatre focussed, 3 year learning programme in the city of Salford exploring how to embed cultural education in our schools and communities, funded by Arts Council England and Department for Culture Media and Sport. They work with major partners including University of Salford, Walk the Plank, The Lowry and Salford Council as part of the local cultural education partnership. The programme works closely with these partners to deliver theatre provision for young people in the city which takes many shapes.
Most recently, in shaping a new offer for Pendleton College (part of Salford City College) which stands as a beacon for young people aspiring to launch careers in arts and media; Stage Directions launched a commission for a professional theatre company to work with students for 5 months and create a new piece of performance. After a competitive selection process, Stage Directions are thrilled to announce that Manchester-based, nationally recognised and acclaimed company: ThickSkin have been commissioned to work with the new Pendleton Stage Directions Ensemble.
ThickSkin are well-known for creating bold & ambitious theatre; reaching and inspiring young, new and representative audiences through their distinctive physicality and cinematic style. They centralise nurturing talent across all areas of theatre-making, providing a springboard for artists who are ready to take a leap, which makes them an incredible fit for the students in Salford. ThickSkin have recently impressed audiences and critics with their virtual reality production which is still digitally touring the UK in association with theatres up and down the country. ThickSkin are quickly solidifying themselves as leaders within the theatre industry in creating work for digital platforms whilst keeping their stagecraft and artistic excellence at the centre of what they do.
The students at Pendleton will become associate members of ThickSkin and work closely with their artistic team to co-create and explore the making of a piece of drama which reflects everyone’s voice, styles and strengths. Co-creation is an important part of the Stage Direction’s programme ensuring that professionals and young people can feel like experts when being creative and share skills with everyone involved. ThickSkin will guide the group through the building blocks of what a brand new piece of theatre might look like using their exceptional physical, movement based style coupled with ideas and input from the students themselves. Lucy Huntbach, Head of Performing and Production Arts was involved in the selection of the company alongside 3 students who interviewed the company after their initial application. Lucy said “The Pendleton Performing Arts department is excited to see this collaboration between ThickSkin and a company of students from 1st and 2nd yr courses, Vocational Acting and Musical theatre, A level Drama and A level Dance. This initiative has come at a time when the performing arts students are hungry to get back into studios and on stages to flex their creative muscle and hone their performance technique and we are looking forward to seeing the work generated by this project. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work alongside industry professionals in developing a show.”
